“[Elam] uses various ointments to reduce tissue damage and speed recovery, and he visits a massage therapist…
I recently found a really great testimonial for sports massage in the New York Times. As we saw in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, athletes are retiring later and later in life, with more and more success in their later years, as well. Stefan Fatsis looks at this same phenomenon in the N.F.L. – especially the kickers. He says they’re having their best season and that the older players are have the best season …

Massage and Pro Football

I was never a believer in massages until I started about two years ago. I’m at the point in my career where I need massages and stretching to keep myself flexible.  It works.
~ Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Sheldon Brown
I found quite an interesting article today. If you’re like so many people, you think of massage as being a luxury that mostly women indulge in on a “mani-pedi-pampering” day. …And you may have the stereotype of football players being tough and macho and therefore, not going in for …

Great article about the effects of alcohol on workout recovery. The article cites massage as being beneficial, as well…

“The third aspect is delayed onset muscle soreness [DOMS]. Most of the recovery strategies people employ which involve hydration, good nutrition, ice baths, pool and saltwater recovery and massage are used to hasten recovery from DOMS to enable you to be as well prepared as possible for the next time you need to train so that you don’t injure yourself.
THE days of the tub of ice packed …

New York Times
By JOHN HANC
Published: June 19, 2006
WHILE joggers, weightlifters, recreational softball players and other fitness enthusiasts will surely be delighted to hear that exercise science now sees lactic acid as a force of good and not evil, the fact remains that people are sore. What can be done about it?
While lactic acid can cause a burning sensation during hard exercise (because it is, as the name suggests, acidic) recent research has confirmed that the real culprits for the so-called delayed muscle soreness that comes one to three days …

McKinley Health Center
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Recovery is one of the most important aspects of any serious athlete’s regimen. When you push your body regularly with training and competition, you need to refuel the muscles so you are ready for the next event or training session. If you neglect post-exercise nutrition, you will run low on energy, and either your training or event performance (or both) will suffer.
It’s important to think about nutrition for recovery throughout the training and competitive season. Pay close attention to recovery nutrition during:

Buzz up!
By Sabrina Rogers
AskMen.com
If you work out seriously, whether it’s running, weightlifting or any other intense sport, you have to make sure that you’re giving your body the fuel and nutrients it needs to recover adequately from the effort.
After a workout, your body’s stores of glycogen — the carbohydrate that is stored in the muscles and liver — are depleted. If you don’t replenish them, your body won’t recover properly and your performance will suffer during your next workout. This is particularly important for athletes who partake in intense …

Low intensity exercise may be better than complete rest after competition
From Elizabeth Quinn
After athletic competition or a hard workout, it would seem that complete rest would be the best way to encourage recovery. However, research is beginning to find some advantages in active recovery. Active recovery refers to engaging in low-intensity exercise after workouts. There are two forms of active recovery. One is during the cool-down phase immediately after a hard effort or workout. The second form of active recovery includes the days following a competition or other intense …

Re-examining the Role of Lactic Acid
By Shirley Vanderbilt

Sometimes a “truth” is not what it seems. Take lactic acid. For years, many massage therapists have been taught that lactic acid can and should be flushed from the muscles of athletes after intense activity. This truism has been passed on to clients who have also accepted it as fact. Both therapist and client thus have established and perpetuated a mutual belief system that purging …
