Sprains, tendonitis, broken bones… What comes to mind first when you hear these words? Football? Rugby? Mixed martial arts? Ballet? Wait. “Ballet”?!?! Yep.
The article Sprains and tendonitis: Dancer injuries and treatments by Lindsay Zier-Vogel introduces us to Paul Papoutsakis, the company athletic therapist for the National Ballet of Canada. As company athletic therapist, Papoutsakis “regularly treats acute injuries, like twisted ankles and broken bones, and says the pain threshold of dancers is probably the highest of all other athletes.”, the article informs us.

I have been a massage therapist for 15 years, and I love to help dissolve pain. I believe that joy, freedom, strength, and mobility are normal states of being for humans — anything that deviates is the body shouting for help. Pain, vomiting, dizziness — not to mention irritability — are just a few of the symptoms I’ve heard about from clients who suffer from migraines. There is no worse feeling in the world than not knowing how …

Although violin-playing is not a sport, these clients are athletes — each day undergoing continuous use of their upper extremities, especially the hands. Let’s cover some of the common dysfunctions seen in violinists, as well as preventive treatments to help keep these athletes’ upper extremities in good …

Migraines hurt.
While symptoms vary from person to person, the pain associated with these headaches is always unpleasant. But there is hope for those who’ve given up on their own coping strategies, and it’s literally within arm’s reach.

CAMDEN (Dec 26): In a perfect world, traditional medicine would be able to focus on preventative health care rather than treating illness and injury. Insurance would happily cover therapies prescribed by a physician promoting physical and emotional well being instead of having to treat patients for all the preventable troubles that seem to plague us these days. It’s hard to deny the fact that therapeutic massage is the number one way to defuse stress, a leading cause of most visits to our primary care …

Massage: A simple 10-minute chair massage can release the tension in our bodies. The Sanford School Department is a local business that has offered to make massage therapy available for its staff. This past school year, the department instituted a program in which a local massage therapist sets up at each of the schools and offers 10-minute chair massages for only $5. The program is hugely popular and very well utilized.

If you know someone who’s getting ready to go into surgery, consider holding off on the get-well-soon balloons, and start looking for a good massage therapist instead. A new study published in the December issue of the American Medical Association’s Archives of Surgery found that massage, in conjunction with regular pain medication, significantly improved patient pain and anxiety after major surgery.

The aim of this pilot study was to compare the effects of a single treatment of the ischemic compression technique with transverse friction massage for myofascial trigger point (MTrP) tenderness. Forty subjects, 17 men and 23 women, aged 19–38 years old, presenting with mechanical neck pain and diagnosed with MTrPs in the upper trapezius muscle, according to the diagnostic criteria described by Simons and by Gerwin, participated in this pilot study.
